The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, found that 27 percent of surveyed girls and 25 percent of surveyed boys reported facing a form of sexual violence on middle school grounds in the past year. Most often, the sexual violence took place in school hallways or classrooms. The study, which was conducted in the spring of , surveyed 1, students from Midwestern middle schools in grades 5 through 8.

Approximately half of the survey participants were female, 59 percent were African-American, and 41 percent were Caucasian. However, in open-ended questions about the sexual violence, students were sometimes dismissive of the harassment, saying that the perpetrator was “joking” and that the incident was “not that bad or serious. Dorothy Espelage, co-author of the study and professor of educational psychology at the University of Illinois, told The Huffington Post.

However, those findings build on the results of a previous study conducted by the same researchers, which found that although teachers are trained on how to deal with school bullying, they are less educated on the issue of student-on-student sexual harassment. Although Education Secretary Arne Duncan sent a letter to schools reminding them of this fact in , Espelage said that when traveling schools, she found that many teachers never read the letter.

The letter specifically differentiates between sexual harassment and bullying , saying that even though a school may employ its own anti-bullying policies, “by limiting its response to a specific application of its anti-bullying disciplinary policy, a school may fail to properly consider whether the student misconduct also results in discriminatory harassment.

These social “cliques” fundamentally influence adolescent life and development. Overall, cliques are a transitory social phase. The major difference is that these reputation-based groups do not necessarily interact with each other, whereas members of a clique do interact with one another and have frequent social interactions.

Male cliques, on the other hand, tend to center around activities that have occurred before the formation of the clique common examples include basketball and video games , and thus may draw less attention to the appearance of male cliques.

Male cliques may have also gone largely unnoticed because they often appear less exclusive toward the non-clique peer group members. Both attitudes appear in some cliques of both sexes and all social groups become more permeable with age. The characteristics of the distinct cliques within each demographic group also vary equally, although members of cliques in one crowd or demographic group may not perceive all of the distinctions in others see also crowds.

The majority of group members’ social interactions occur within the same small group. They comprise less than half of any given school population at a time, with a higher concentration among girls and younger grades. Liaisons associate with a few members of multiple cliques and are generally regarded positively by their peers.
