Band razors have a very low level of popularity among wet-shavers, supposedly due to the razor’s inability to maintain a flat edge. Like my E2 Schick injector. It’s a tad aggressive, and doesn’t give me as close and comfortable shave as the Schick adjustable with a twin blade. And all of my Milords beautiful, near mint, they just don’t.
Before The Beginning Even though our vision of prehistoric times is Encino Man, the truth is we were shaving — or getting rid of facial hair in different ways — centuries before razors and electric shaving were a thing. In ancient Egypt, they had advanced to hair-removing creams, pumice stones and different types of blades. In the Bronze Age, obsidian tools were sharpened to use as a way to shave. When Romans ruled, they would use a novacilia with a blade. Gillette in the early s, electrics were deemed an advancement when they came to light in the s.
Canadian Jacob Schick made the invention late in the decade, as he was under the impression that if a man shaved properly every day, he could live to That would have been nice, but just not having to spend money on shaving cream, soap and other products needed for wet shaving was a big enough win. The first iteration was a bit clunky, as you needed both hands to operate it.
By , he had sold 1. As unfortunate as it was that he passed right when his company was booming, his invention would live on. Not only would it persist, but other companies would continue to carry electric shaving to new heights. Remington came to the forefront in with their Close Shaver, which included a micro-screen foil over the blades. It allowed for a little bit more comfort in the shave.
The marketplace became a head-to-head battle forcing customers to decide between the shavers with front-back blades versus the circular blades of Philips.

Safety Razors These are the old-fashioned type. You buy the sturdy handle usually metal , and replace only the thin metal razor blade. Until around , this was the only kind of home-use razor you could buy unless you shaved with a straight “cutthroat” razor, like a barber with a leather strop, but most men didn’t take it that far. Expect each blade to last for about five shaves, according to shaving expert Mark Herro at Sharpologist. Cartridge Razors Most men use cartridge razors nowadays. You buy the handle usually plastic , and when the blades get dull, you replace the whole razor head aka cartridge.
Fanned out in the plastic cartridge are at least two, and up to six metal blades — one or five to lift the whisker, and one to actually cut it — plus a lubricating strip or two. Internet shaving clubs sell them for less.

Edit The risk of injury from handling razor blades was further reduced in when Wilkinson released its ” Bonded Shaving System “, which embedded a single blade in a disposable plastic cartridge. A flurry of competing models soon followed with everything from one to six blades, with many cartridge blade razors also having disposable handles. Cartridge blade razors are sometime considered to be a generic category of their own and not a variety of safety razor. The similarities between single-edge cartridge blade razors and the classic injector razor do, however, provide equal justification for treating both categories contiguously.
They claimed that research showed the tandem action of the two blades to give a closer shave than a single blade , because of a hysteresis effect. In addition to the cutting action of the first blade, it also pulls the hair out of the follicle into which it does not fully retract before the second blade cuts it further.

For over a hundred years, shaving has been a common practice among men. Back in the old days, men could have their unwanted facial hair shaved through the services provided by professional barbers. Finally, a safety blade was invented to keep hygiene standards high with less skill needed. With a variety of single blade razors available in the market today, there is absolutely no reason for you not to look presentable wherever you are.
The blade rotated in a pivot connected to a handle, thus making it foldable and easily stored with either a plastic case or cloth. Benjamin Huntsman, one of the early manufacturers of this type of razors, ventured on using cast steel blades and adorned handles. His creations were arguably one of the best straight razors produced in history which was later adapted by English and French manufacturers.
With its availability, shaving has been a common routine among men, though, there were still concerns rising for others who are less skillful when it comes to handling these blades. This concern was later addressed through the development of a disposable single blade razor, designed to aid even the clumsiest of hand to produce a neat and good shave. Due to its popularity and fool-proof usage, the demand for straight razors and services from professional barbers greatly dropped.
Though it is no longer manufactured, it is still widely available in the market. Narrow blades are still being produced for the injector variant of a single blade razor, a design which was made popular by Schick during the s. Following Schick was the brand Gillett , who then came out with the same concept in , and as years passed by, these blades transformed into what consumers nowadays see as cartridge style blades.
With the benefit of less shave burns, nicks, ingrown and other shaving injuries, these razors have completely reduced the number of men using straight blades.

This is the best razor – it’s sturdy, shaves well, is easy to hold. I don’t know why I’m always late to the party when it comes to finding out things but apparently Schick discontinued this razor years ago. I knew it was hard to find refills, but it never occured to me that they would stop producing this awesome razor. A couple years ago the local Fry’s grocery store was having a closeout on the refill packs and I bought all they had, since I always had such trouble finding them.
Had I known I was never going to see another refill again, I would have gone on a massive, valley-wide hunt for all remaining refill packs. It’s only in the last couple months that I’ve come to the realization that this razor and its refills are gone forever. If you Google you can find lots of reviews, lots of women who loved their Schick as much as I love mine, and lots of wailing at the fact that this item is gone. You can also find ebay auctions for refill packs for truly unbelievable prices.
I loved my Schick, but I’m not so in love with the idea of shaved legs to part with the kind of money the sellers are asking. I’ve tried some of the “feminine” foo-foo razors with pretty names and fancy colors but they either broke damn swivel heads! I’ve tried some men’s razors, too, but I’m just not happy with what I’ve found.
I’m not a fan of waxing, I don’t have the funds for laser – it’s seriously tempting to just go au naturel and let the leg hair grow. I’m getting to a point in my life where I just don’t care what others think.

This historic document was printed by the American Banknote Company in and has an ornate border around it. Schick razors and electric shavers trace their origins to the inventive U. Army Lieutenant Colonel Jacob Schick. He retired from the military in but then returned to service at the start of World War I. During his respite from the army, Colonel Schick staked mining claims in Alaska and British Columbia.
It was during one of these cold winters that he first conceived the idea for a dry shaver and sketched out a design that could shave without water or lather.
Schick introduced its highly successful single blade safety razor system, that stored twenty blades in a steel injector. While second in sales to Gillette globally, Schick is the top selling brand of safety razors and blades in Japan.
Tue Jan 20, 8: Well stated as always, DB. What got me curious was seeing a couple vintage Schick ads for the Deluxe, neither of which mentioned unlocking the tab for cleaning. There was also an instruction booklet for some non-Deluxe E that suggested it’s designed NOT to come apart. The reference mentioned in the above post puts that question to rest; it seems that Derek has a sticky wicket. Thank you, Ron, member of the “Brotherhood’!
Schick’s are sometimes hard to figure out when it comes to dating them, identifiying models, etc. They’re date codes will drive you to the funny farm trying to figure out. Look at how many different ‘Deluxe’ models were available over the years. Sometimes it meant that the razor came with a case of sorts, other times, it had a different head on the handle So, I just gave up and look at the razor itself and go from there.
